Classrooms & Beyond
Classrooms & Beyond
The efforts to understand and rethink classroom practices, moving beyond existing frameworks to overcome their limitations and inform curriculum development. With a focus on inclusivity, creativity, and engagement, I have experimented with innovative teaching strategies and interactive learning methods. Through these efforts, I strive to create meaningful and adaptable educational experiences that encourage critical thinking and embrace diverse perspectives.
Since 2018, Jodo Gyan has been working in collaboration with the Kerala Development Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) to enhance mathematics education in government schools across Kerala. The program, which started in select schools, has now expanded to all Model Residential Schools and 101 Government Schools across 14 districts, working closely with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT). The initiative aims to introduce innovative teaching methodologies to make mathematics learning more meaningful and engaging for students.
Context & Objective
Mathematics education in many schools often focuses on rote learning, leading to a lack of conceptual understanding among students. Recognizing the need for an alternative approach, this project was designed to:
Develop and implement child-centric and activity-based learning methodologies.
Equip teachers with effective pedagogical strategies to enhance classroom teaching.
Provide well-designed learning materials to support student engagement and comprehension.
Create sustainable models of mathematics teaching that can be replicated across the state.
Role & Contributions
From the inception of the initiative, I have played a key role in multiple capacities:
Teacher & Teacher Educator: Conducted training sessions for pre-primary, in-service, and community teachers to familiarize them with innovative teaching techniques.
Curriculum Developer: Assisted in designing and implementing a curriculum that aligns with child-cantered learning methodologies.
Learning Materials Designer: Developed hands-on learning materials to support conceptual understanding and engagement.
Project Coordination & Administration: Contributed to strategizing, managing, and overseeing various aspects of the initiative, ensuring smooth execution across schools.
Documentation & Reporting: Maintained comprehensive records and reports, archiving program data for future reference and evaluation.
Process & Approach
The project was implemented in a phased manner:
Initial Research & Pilot Phase: Conducted needs assessment and piloted innovative teaching methods in selected 3 community centres in the first stage and 14 centres in the second stage.
Teacher Training & Capacity Building: Organized workshops and training sessions for animators, community teachers and teacher educators.
Development of Teaching-Learning Materials: Designed hands-on materials to support active learning.
Implementation in Schools: Expanded the program to all Model Residential Schools and additional government schools.
Collaboration with SCERT: Integrated the program within the broader curriculum framework, ensuring alignment with state educational policies.
Continuous Monitoring & Feedback: Regular assessment and feedback loops to refine teaching methodologies and materials.
Final Outcome
Widespread Implementation: The initiative successfully expanded from selected community centres to 101 Government Schools and all Model Residential Schools in Kerala and about to adapt it into SCERT curriculum.
Enhanced Teacher Competence: Teachers reported greater confidence in using child-centric approaches to teach mathematics. Community teachers restarted their studies and about to get in to the educational system.
Improved Student Engagement: Students demonstrated better conceptual understanding and increased enthusiasm for learning mathematics.
Sustainable Impact: The collaboration with SCERT ensures that the methodologies and materials developed remain integrated into the long-term education framework.
Learnings & Reflections
Teacher Training is Key: Equipping teachers with the right tools and methodologies significantly enhances the effectiveness of classroom teaching.
Hands-On Learning Transforms Education: Activity-based approaches make learning more engaging and meaningful for students.
Sustained Support is Essential: Continuous training and resource development are crucial for maintaining and expanding the program’s success.
Through my work in art and design education, I have been actively involved in facilitating foundational programs, training educators, and conducting hands-on workshops. My focus has been on making art accessible and engaging while ensuring that both students and educators develop a strong conceptual and technical understanding of creative processes.
Context & Objective
The objective of my work has been to bridge the gap between artistic skill-building and creative thinking by implementing structured yet flexible learning methodologies. Whether working with aspiring artists, educators, or children, my approach has emphasized experiential learning, material exploration, and critical engagement with art and design practices. My interventions have aimed to empower students with the confidence to express themselves while also equipping educators with effective teaching strategies.
Roles & Contributions
Designed and facilitated foundational art and design programs, guiding students through core principles, conceptual development, and technical skills.
Trained faculty members, focusing on innovative teaching methods, student engagement strategies, and curriculum development.
Conducted hands-on workshops on techniques such as Linocut Printing and Tie & Dye, making traditional and contemporary art techniques accessible to diverse learners.
Led and managed educational spaces, overseeing administrative and operational aspects to ensure smooth program delivery.
Curated interactive learning experiences that encouraged students to think beyond technique and engage deeply with creative problem-solving.
Developed structured lesson plans and creative modules, balancing theoretical knowledge with hands-on exploration.
